Knockdown Texture & Color
Knockdown is the term derived from the technique that is used to flatten the peaks of splatter spray compound, producing a unique stucco-ish look. Knockdown textures are ideal for creating a provincial or period look. Whether you desire a subtle South-of-the-Border appearance or the weightier expression of a Mediterranean texture, the knockdown technique is a good choice for adding a dimensional element to your interior design.
Introducing multiple colors to the process works well when additional depth is sought. By using similar colors within the same family group, best results seem to favor a darker color base with a lighter splatter tone on top, producing a muddle of contrasts, giving depth and character to any wall. Most paint stores and home centers offer color decks, color chips or swatch strips that display various coordinating colors which help accent and balance your primary color choice.
Steps: Your Knockdown Project
- Protect floor area with drop cloths and tape off all windows with plastic sheeting
- Prep, prime and paint your walls using the base color of your choice
- Prepare drywall mix per instruction including your secondary paint color in with your water measurements
- Dial in the sprayer adjustment for the desired texture consistency
- Test spray on cardboard to achieve desired setting
- Spray texture onto surface covering 60 to 80 percent of the walls' surface area
- Once applied, allow the texture partial drying - approximately 10 minutes depending on humidity
- With a wide drywall knife, rest the blade gently against the surface and sweep lightly, gliding over the splatter
- Let it dry and your job is complete.
The application of a knockdown texture can be a very messy job requiring an intermediate skill level for the do-it-yourselfer. You will have to rent or purchase a hopper gun to complete the project. Hiring a professional painter or contractor to complete the job for you may cost a little more, but with your knowledge of the process and your contribution of some sweat equity, it should not be prohibitively expensive.
Whether you prefer to use a light or dark color base with the secondary color on the top mix, or a single color for both the effect is going to be both dramatic and rewarding. Used in the knockdown process, earth tones especially communicate old world juxtaposition against modern or contemporary settings. Getting creative with color combinations and texture weights will produce an effect that is sure to become the highlight of your room.
